Dr. Xu had been engaged in the theory, technology, teaching and experimental studies of the acoustic emission, ultrasonics, structure laser measurement technology and automatic control. Research includes ultrasound scanning theory and technology, scanning acoustic microscopy(SAM), nondestructive testing robotically(NDTR), and evaluation and calibration for characteristics of piezoelectric ultrasonic transducerand NDT instruments. Also including acoustic emission, elastic modulus, residual stress measurement theory and technology,NDT of composite material, and geometric measurement theory and technology, and monitoring detection theory and technology. 

Over 130 papers and 60 innovative patents had been achieved up to now.
